Title: Facing Unpleasant Facts: The Insolubility of Disillusionment in Anton Chekhov’s Ivanov.

For Anton Chekhov, disillusionment is the consequence of an overly committed worldview. The more rigid our convictions, the more likely we are to suffer disillusionment when those convictions are challenged or overturned by experience. Chekhov’s play, Ivanov, illustrates this idea by exploring the various responses we give when confronted with disconfirming evidence and the failure to temper our beliefs with the need to evolve them.
