Title: “Mapping Cinema Ghosts: Film, Culture, and Settler Colonialism in Australasia”

From their debut in 1896, moving pictures have carried conceptions of different cultures around the globe. The dominance of American film through most of the twentieth century has obscured the way in which film facilitates dialogue between many different cultures, in tandem and sometimes at odds with other geopolitical trends, including imperialism, immigration, settler colonialism, armed conflict, trade wars, and competing ideas about morality. By mapping the ghosts of European silent film in Australia and New Zealand between 1908 and 1928, this project explores how film and culture intersected during the bygone golden age of European cinema in settler colonial societies at the other end of the earth.
