Religious studies in Modern Europe brings together scholars from across the college and university that study the European Church of Jesus-Christ of Latter-day Saints and other religious traditions from a humanities perspective. In addition to the study of the history of the Church in Europe, we also focus on how the idea of Mormonism was used and adapted around the globe, to explore the way members of the LDS Church are depicted and thought of in a non-American context. We also anticipate that the group will evolve to study other religious traditions and practices in Europe (e.g. Catholicism, Islam, Protestantism, Quakers, secularism, etc.). We meet to discuss a faculty member’s work related to the topic, invite European religious studies scholars to campus to discuss their work, and are planning to develop an edited volume from our research and conversations.
