What role can the humanities play in shaping civic life and strengthening communities? On Thursday, November 19th at 3:30 PM in 4010 JFSB, the Humanities Center will host a roundtable discussion on the future of humanities education and public engagement. Participants will explore how colleges and universities can work collaboratively with community partners, cultural organizations, schools, and public agencies to share resources, foster meaningful connections, and broaden access to humanistic learning and inquiry.

“At the Center and Beyond: Humanities Education, Public Engagement, and Collaboration”

In an uncertain landscape of shifting institutional priorities and public expectations, this roundtable will consider the value and future of humanities education. Our conversation will center on the ways that we might extend the work of the humanities beyond the university through reciprocal partnerships with communities, cultural organizations, schools, and public agencies. Participants will also discuss opportunities for regional collaboration among colleges and universities, including shared programming, resources, expertise, and public-facing initiatives. Together, we will consider how the humanities can contribute to civic life and how institutions might collectively sustain and expand the reach of humanistic education and inquiry.

Roundtable participants include:

  • Matthew Gowans, Dean of the School of Humanities, Snow College
  • Jodi Graham, Executive Director, Utah Humanities
  • Jean Boreen, Dean of the College of Humanities & Social Sciences, Southern Utah University
  • Deborah Marrott, Dean of the College of Humanities & Social Sciences, Utah Valley University
