About our guests:
Daniel Balderston was the Mellon Professor of Hispanic Languages and Literatures at the University of Pittsburgh from 2008-2024. He has been the director of the Borges Center (at Pitt) and the editor of the Center’s journal, Variaciones Borges, since 2005. In retirement, he continues to serve as co-director of the Borges Center and co-editor of the journal. Among his many specialties, he has dedicated a significant amount of time to the study of Jorge Luis Borges’s manuscripts. He will speak to us on transcription as translation.
Victoria Livingstone is a translator, writer, and editor who earned her PhD in Hispanic literature from Boston University. She works in English, Spanish, and Brazilian Portuguese. She writes in several genres—creative, academic, journalistic—and also works as both a literary and a commercial translator. She is a former editor of the “Writers on Writers” section of Asymptote, and she is the current managing editor of MLN for Johns Hopkins. She will speak to us about MLN during the weekly Humanities Center Colloquium.
Sergio Waisman is Professor of Spanish and International Affairs at the George Washington University. He is a translator, translation studies scholar, and novelist. He has translated works by Ricardo Piglia, Jorge Luis Borges, Mariano Azuela, and others. He will speak to us about his experience translating Piglia.
