Please join us on Thursday, March 25th at 3:00 pm via Zoom for this week’s colloquium. Emron Esplin, Associate Professor of English will begin to share the untold history of competition and collaboration that surrounds the several (re)translations of the fiction of Jorge Luis Borges into English between 1962 and the late 1990s. He will discuss the various approaches he is taking to tell this history—via the archives, paratexts (especially correspondence), and descriptive translation studies—share a few of the juiciest bits from the rivalries between translators, and question the idea of the “Retranslation Hypothesis.” Finally, he hopes to receive feedback from the audience on some of the disparate ways he is considering for framing and organizing his book project around this topic, tentatively titled “Bringing Borges ‘Home.’”
