Title: How Proficient is Proficient Enough for BYU Language Majors?

BYU is known as one of the most well-respected language universities in the world; however, not all language graduates even reach the Advanced Low level of proficiency after four years of college instruction. Those who serve a mission or participate in a study abroad or internship program after sometimes more likely to reach an Advanced level than those who don’t. With the resources BYU has, we are well-equipped to assist our language students in reaching Advanced and Superior levels of language proficiency. As part of the Mastering Language through Global Debate series, the textbook Mastering German through Global Debate is a level-specific, scaffolded language exercises in addition to rhetorical strategies and topic-specific texts.  This presentation will provide an overview of the importance of language proficiency for BYU students at levels higher than Intermediate, an introduction to debate as a Superior-level as a task, and an approach to organizing an entire course or sequences of courses that facilitate Superior-level speech.
