The AOA research group will be hosting Sarah DeMott (Digital Research Specialist, NYU) who was part of the Rutgers Center for Cultural Analysis’s year-long Archipelagoes Seminar on Tuesday, February 28, 3:00-4:30pm (4186 JFSB).
We’ll be workshopping an essay she’s writing for an in-progress essay collection called Archipelagic Thinking (eds. Yolanda Martinez-San Miguel and Michelle Stephens). In the essay, she uses Catholic baptismal records of 1860-1890 to trace shifting archipelagic population, challenging “the historiography of Italian and North African history, as well as deconstructing the ways in which European imperialism has influenced how the environmental borders between Africa, Europe, and the Middle East have been historically imagined.” During the workshop, she’ll also be sharing the database and digital maps she’s put together for this chapter.
