Title: “The Gesture of Belief: Mediating Presence Through Apocryphal Technology”
Technology is somehow caught up in our systems of belief––we sometimes stumble upon technology that has no functional purpose, but yet it sets into circulation the belief that it functions. Succinctly, there are occasions when we engage with digital and technical rituals and we do not produce the effect we set out to, but instead only reproduce the belief that the ritual itself is doing something. In my remarks I discuss how Apocryphal Technology may be regarded as any piece of technology which does not work, but is widely believed to be functional in its very circulation.
