National Humanities Center Summer Residency CFP 2024

BYU Humanities Center Sponsored NHC Summer Residency CFP

The BYU Humanities Center is pleased to announce a Call for Proposals to participate in the Summer Residency Program sponsored by the National Humanities Center (NHC), located in the Research Triangle Park of North Carolina (near Chapel Hill, Durham, and Raleigh).

Every year, the NHC sponsors a four-week summer residency program in June that is intended to assist faculty in jump-starting or making substantial progress on a current research project. The BYU Humanities Center will sponsor one faculty fellow for the 2024 program.

The NHC writes the following about the Summer Residency Program:

Summer Residents are provided individual studies in our quiet, light-filled glass building in the woods of Research Triangle Park, North Carolina. They have access to their studies 24/7 during their residencies. Our renowned library staff assists Residents in procuring all books needed for their research by the time they arrive, as well as any requests during their time in residence.

Residents are housed in a hotel located near the NHC and provided with continental breakfast and a full lunch from our in-house chef and baker during regular business hours. Lunch in our Commons is famous for the vibrant exchange of ideas and synergistic discussions that inevitably lead to enhanced scholarly output.

Through this program, faculty can experience a concentrated period of supported research and scholarship in this world-renowned setting. Scholars who have participated in the NHC’s programs have called it an ‘intellectual nirvana’ and have often remarked that the contemplative space and intellectual community provided by the NHC contributed significantly to the ultimate quality of their work, which includes over 1,700 published volumes.

If you are interested in applying to be a Summer Resident Fellow of the National Humanities Center, please submit a short dossier, with the following documents, by Friday, December 1, 2023, to Rex Nielson (rex_nielson@byu.edu):

  • 1-2 page rationale and description of the project
  • CV

The BYU Humanities Center will pay for all the expenses of the program except for airfare. BYU faculty can use their research funds to cover travel to and from the NHC location in North Carolina. All CFS-track faculty in the College of Humanities are eligible to apply.

Applications will be evaluated by the current faculty fellows of the BYU Humanities Center. Please contact Rex Nielson for more information.
