In his first century CE poem, Civil War, Lucan narrated the conflict between political factions at the end of the Roman Republic and illustrated the moral, political, and physical consequences of the war. His depictions of the natural world are based on centuries of literary tradition and are part of a complete understanding of the poem’s program. My project examines how the centrality of nature in Lucan’s poetry allows us to read the Civil War as part of a long-running dialogue about the place of humans in their environment, while at the same time representing a particularly interesting portion of the Latin epic/Roman literary tradition.
